The institute, recognised as a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence, hosted an institutional event at the UPV that brought together representatives from the Government of Spain, the Spanish State Research Agency, CSIC and the Universitat Politècnica de València.
The Institute for Plant Molecular and Cell Biology hosted yesterday, 13 July, the ceremony for the presentation of the 2025 Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu accreditations. The event took place at the Cubo Azul Auditorium, located in the Ciudad Politécnica de la Innovación at the Universitat Politècnica de València, in a particularly significant day for the scientific community and for IBMCP.
The ceremony was attended by institutional representatives from the Government of Spain, the Spanish State Research Agency, CSIC and the UPV, including the Minister for Science, Innovation and Universities, Diana Morant; the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Universities, Juan Cruz Cigudosa; the Director of the Spanish State Research Agency, José Manuel Fernández Labastida; the Rector of the Universitat Politècnica de València, José E. Capilla; and the President of CSIC, Eloísa del Pino.
During the ceremony, the accreditations were presented to the centres and units recognised in the 2025 call, acknowledging their scientific excellence, research impact and ability to drive frontier knowledge in strategic areas.
For IBMCP, the event had a particularly special meaning, not only because the institute acted as host, but also because it has been recognised as a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence. Cristina Ferrándiz, scientific director of IBMCP’s proposal, collected the accreditation on behalf of the institute.
The programme also included a dialogue with representatives of the accredited Severo Ochoa centres and María de Maeztu units, highlighting the role of these distinctions in promoting excellent research, talent attraction, internationalisation and knowledge transfer.
The Severo Ochoa recognition represents an important endorsement of IBMCP’s scientific trajectory and its contribution to the fields of plant biology and biotechnology. This new boost will allow the institute to continue advancing in the development of solutions aimed at more sustainable agriculture, higher-quality crops and healthier food, while also contributing to the care and protection of the environment.
The celebration of this event at the UPV marks a milestone for IBMCP and for its entire research, technical and management community, whose collective work has made this recognition possible.
