Investigación

Nuestro laboratorio está interesado en el estudio del mecanismo molecular que explica el alto grado de plasticidad del desarrollo vegetal. El tipo de preguntas que nos hacemos es:

  • ¿Cómo se integra toda la información ambiental (luz, temperatura, etc) y endógena (edad de la planta, estado nutricional, etc) para decidir el programa de desarrollo óptimo en cada momento?
  • ¿Cómo distinguen las plantas entre señales y ruido?
  • ¿Qué valor adaptativo tienen los mecanismos que conocemos?
  • ¿Cómo han evolucionado los circuitos que regulan el crecimiento?

Nuestra hipótesis es que la plasticidad radica en la propia arquitectura de las redes de señalización; es decir, lo que proporciona flexibilidad y robustez al desarrollo vegetal es la gran interconectividad entre las rutas de señalización de hormonas y de factores ambientales. Casi todo nuestro trabajo se centra en el estudio de las giberelinas, las auxinas y los brasinosteroides en Arabidopsis, tomate, arroz y Marchantia polymorpha, empleando técnicas de genética molecular, bioquímica y genómica.

Un hito reciente en nuestra investigación ha sido haber encontrado el mecanismo por el que las proteínas DELLA actúa como conectores moleculares o ‘hubs’ en las redes de señalización que controlan las respuestas de las plantas a su entorno. Los niveles de DELLAs son el resultado de las condiciones ambientales (luz, temperatura) además de la oscilación diaria impuesta por el reloj circadiano. Y las DELLAs a su vez transfieren esa información ambiental a la célula mediante la interacción física con un gran número de factores de transcripción, a través de las cuales pueden coordinar múltiples respuestas celulares.

Desde el punto de vista de los procesos de desarrollo que estudiamos, dos nos resultan particularmente interesantes : la fotomorfogénesis y el crecimiento secundario. La fotomorfogénesis es el programa de desarrollo que siguen las plantas en presencia de luz, al contrario del seguido en la oscuridad, y también intervienen otras señales como la temperatura y los niveles de oxígeno.  El crecimiento secundario es el crecimiento en grosor de ciertos órganos, causado por la expansión radial de la vasculatura, y es la base para la formación de madera en las especies leñosas. Este crecimiento depende en gran medida de las condiciones ambientales, como la temperatura, y también de la edad de la planta.
