Investigación

Nuestro grupo de investigación está interesado en el diseño de productos agrícolas innovadores utilizando herramientas de genómica, biotecnología y biología sintética.

Nuestro principal sistema experimental es el fruto del tomate, y nuestro objetivo es aumentar su valor añadido mediante la incorporación de nuevas formas, colores, aromas y propiedades saludables. Para ello, exploramos la variabilidad natural de especies silvestres relacionadas con el tomate con el fin de identificar loci responsables de rasgos de calidad del fruto. Una vez identificados estos loci, utilizamos estrategias de mejora asistida por marcadores para transferirlos a cultivares modernos de tomate. Más allá de los límites impuestos por la hibridación sexual y la variabilidad natural, también utilizamos herramientas biotecnológicas como la ingeniería multigénica y la transformación genética para introducir nuevos rasgos de calidad en el genoma del tomate.

En una segunda línea de investigación, aplicamos herramientas y principios de la Biología Sintética para diseñar plantas biofactoría capaces de producir compuestos de alto valor añadido. En nuestro laboratorio hemos aprendido a construir instrucciones genéticas cada vez más complejas a nivel de ADN. Introduciendo estas instrucciones en el genoma de especies de solanáceas como tomate, tabaco y especialmente *Nicotiana benthamiana* (pariente del tabaco), nuestro objetivo es redirigir el programa genético de la planta hacia la síntesis de compuestos de interés. Con la ayuda de *Agrobacterium tumefaciens* y, en ocasiones, de vectores virales, estamos aprendiendo a producir en poco tiempo altas concentraciones de sustancias de alto valor como anticuerpos, lectinas o antídotos contra venenos de serpiente.
