Biography
José Pío Beltrán Porter is a Research Professor at the CSIC in the Institute for Plant Molecular and Cellular Biology (IBMCP), a joint center of the CSIC and the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV). He holds a PhD in Chemical Sciences from the Universitat de València (UV), specialized in plant-pathogen interactions with Professor Gary A. Strobel at Montana State University (USA), and in the Molecular Genetics of flower and fruit development at the Max-Planck-Institut für Züchtungsforschung (Germany) with Professors H. Saedler and H. Sommer.
He isolated the Deficiens gene, the first homeotic gene described in higher plants that regulates floral organ identity. He leads the Plant Reproductive Biology and Biotechnology Laboratory at the IBMCP. He holds three patents, acquired by the company PBL (UK), which enable the production of male-sterile plants for hybrid development of agronomic interest, seedless tomato fruits, and increased flower number and shelf life of ornamental plants.
He has served as Vice President of the CSIC. He was elected ad personam member of the Advisory Life Sciences Working Group of the European Space Agency (ESA). He was a member of the Board of Governors of the Joint Research Centre of the European Union from 2002 to 2013. He is also a member of the Scientific Committee for National Parks, a Corresponding Member of the Royal National Academy of Pharmacy, former President of the European Federation of Plant Biology Societies (FESPB), President of the CSIC Bioethics Committee, member of the Scientific Committee of the CRAG (Centre for Research in Agricultural Genomics, Barcelona), and has been a member of the Board of Directors of the European Plant Science Organization (EPSO) since January 2012.
Professor Beltrán has published over one hundred research articles in prestigious international journals in his field, as well as numerous outreach articles in educational, cultural, and social fields. From 2007 to 2011, he was director of the science outreach television program Trasfondo on RTV UPV.
