Jorge Casal undertook his early studies at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA), where he completed his MSc in 1987. Then he moved to the University of Leicester (UK) where he completed his PhD in 1989. He is now Professor at the Faculty of Agronomy of the UBA, a Senior Research Investigator of the National Research Council of Argentina at Instituto de Investigaciones Fisiológicas y Ecológicas Vinculadas a la Agricultura, and the Head of laboratory at Instituto Leloir, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Plants respond to the environmental challenges with changes in the growth patterns that adjust their body form to the prevailing conditions. Following a reductionist approach, we normally investigate the molecular mechanisms involved in the growth response to a given environmental cue under optimal conditions of the other features of the environment. However, plants have to face a complex environment, involving simultaneous cues. The seminar will describe the mechanisms of convergence of environmental cues on the signalling network involved in plant responses to shade from neighbours.
