«Pathogenic virus RNA: conformation, function and therapeutic targeting»

In this lecture, case studies of RNA motifs playing key roles in the replication cycle of hepatitis C, HIV-1 and SARS-CoV-2 will be discussed.  I will describe the nuclear magnetic resonance, X-ray scattering and fluorescence methods used in my laboratory to study their three-dimensional shape, and how we think that these RNA conformations play a role in biological function. In several cases, we are interrogating these RNA motifs with small molecules in an attempt to discover new antiviral agents. I will provide specific examples, and will discuss the strategies and chemical challenges involved in the RNA targeting field.
