Research
The main objective is to develop and apply various biotechnological approaches for the genetic improvement of horticultural species (melon, watermelon, cucumber, and tomato) and ornamental plants. The techniques we use for this purpose include:
- Genetic transformation of horticultural crops to enhance tolerance to salinity and water stress, resistance to diseases, genetic modification of developmental traits, and quality improvement.
- Genetic transformation of ornamental species to delay senescence and genetically modify developmental traits.
- Functional genomics through insertional mutagenesis, trapping, PTGS, etc.
- Protoplast fusion to obtain new allopolyploids and asymmetric hybrids.
- Production of haploids and double-haploids in horticultural species.
- Somaclonal selection of ornamental plants.
- Micropropagation of carnivorous and ornamental plant species.
Horticultural species: Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), Melon (Cucumis melo L.), Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus Thunb. [Matsum. & Nakai]), Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.).
Related wild species of the genera: Solanum sp., Cucumis sp., and Citrullus sp.
Ornamental plants: Ficus benjamina, F. lyrata, F. elastica, Codiaeum variegatum, Kalanchoe blossfeldiana, Begonia sp., Philodendron sp., Spathiphyllum sp., Syngonium sp., Columnea sp., Schlumbergera sp., Hatiora sp., Pelargonium × hortorum, Pelargonium peltatum, and Pelargonium domesticum.
Carnivorous plants: Dionaea muscipula, Drosera aliciae, D. binata, D. capensis typica, D. capensis alba, D. nidiformis, D. spatulata, D. regia, D. nidiformis, Drosophyllum lusitanicum, Byblis liniflora, Sarracenia × moorei, Darlingtonia californica, and others.
