Origin and Background
The Plant Breeding Genomics Group was established in 2008 with the incorporation of Antonio J. Monforte to the IBMCP as a CSIC Tenured Scientist. He had previously completed his PhD at IVIA, followed by a postdoctoral stay at Cornell University, and worked for over eight years as a researcher at IRTA (now merged with CRAG). This marked the beginning of a new research line at IBMCP focused on the application of genomic tools in plant breeding, which had not previously existed at the institute.
The first members of the group were PhD students Gerardo Sánchez and Walter Barrantes, postdoctoral researcher Aurora Díaz, and lab technician Soledad Casal, who laid the foundation for the research line.
In 2014, Carlos Romero joined as a CSIC Tenured Scientist. Carlos had completed his PhD at IBMCP, later joining the R&D department of the seed company Rijk Zwaan S.A., and subsequently worked as a researcher at IVIA for over 12 years. Postdoctoral researchers Clara Pons and Maria José Gonzalo also joined the group, contributing to its consolidation.
Scientific Interests
Our main objective is the application of genomics to identify genes involved in agronomically important traits, primarily in horticultural crops. Our theoretical framework is rooted in population genetics, quantitative genetics, evolution, and breeding theory, which we integrate with agronomy, molecular biology, and genomics.
We generate knowledge and tools useful for the development of new cultivars that meet current industry needs, as well as fundamental insights into the genetic and molecular bases of phenotypic variation.
We are particularly interested in uncovering “hidden” genetic variability in wild species to improve productivity, disease resistance, tolerance to abiotic stresses, and fruit quality.
The basic tools we use include molecular markers. We started with RFLPs, then moved to SSRs, SNPs, and currently use high-throughput genotyping and massive sequencing.
Our strategies include the development of genetic maps, QTL analysis, and the development of introgression lines or QTL-NILs.
Our current specific research interests include:
• Genetic basis of fruit morphology in melon
• Genetic control of domestication in melon
• Interspecific reproductive barriers in the genus Cucumis
• Gametophytic self-incompatibility system in Prunus
• Characterization, valorization, and improvement of traditional European tomato and melon varieties
• Heat tolerance in tomato
• Response to abiotic stresses in cucurbits
• Resistance to Plum Pox Virus in Prunus
