Investigación
Nuestra investigación orbita alrededor de dos temáticas fundamentales. Una de ellas hace referencia al entendimiento de los mecanismos moleculares y la identificación de genes que median en el establecimiento de respuestas adaptativas de las plantas a los cambios del entorno en el que crecen. Constituye un eje fundamental dentro de esta temática el entender los mecanismos de resistencia y susceptibilidad de las plantas a las agresiones patogénicas. Para tal fin utilizamos el sistema modelo de Arabidopsis como sistema experimental, con el consiguiente traslado y aplicación del conocimiento científico obtenido a otras especies vegetales de mayor relevancia agronómica y también industrial. Para apoyar estos estudios hemos creado una plataforma de genética química que pretendemos instrumentalizar para identificar moléculas agonistas y antagonistas de procesos relacionados con la respuestas adaptativas de las plantas.
La otra temática a la que también estamos dirigiendo recursos y esfuerzos de investigación está relacionada con la realización de aproximaciones genómicas y genéticas de alto calado en cultivos energéticos de referencia. Con ello pretendemos maximizar la producción de moléculas de alto valor añadido para el sector de las energías renovables, en particular en el de la Bioenergía, con el fin de contribuir a la producción de biocombustibles de segunda y tercera generación a partir de materia prima vegetal. En particular estamos desarrollando una aproximación de mejora genética acelerada del cultivo de Euphrobia lathyris L. así como una aproximación genético molecular para el mejor entendiendo las bases moleculares y celulares de la diferenciación de células laticíferas que actúan como despensa energética de esta especie y son las portadora de los “energy carriers” de esta especie.
