Investigación
La disponibilidad de agua es una de las principales limitaciones para la productividad agrícola. Más del 34 % de las pérdidas en la producción agrícola y ganadera se atribuyen a la sequía, lo que supone un coste total de 37 mil millones de dólares para el sector. Nuestro grupo aplica la biología química para entender la tolerancia a la sequía y desarrollar herramientas biotecnológicas para combatir el cambio climático. Con el objetivo de realizar descubrimientos con impacto en la agricultura, estudiamos diversas especies vegetales, incluyendo maíz, arroz y tomate, así como plantas modelo como Arabidopsis y el modelo de monocotiledónea C4 Setaria viridis.
En los últimos años hemos seguido un enfoque de descubrimiento de fármacos para diseñar, cribar, sintetizar y evaluar pequeñas moléculas capaces de activar la resistencia a la sequía en cultivos. El diseño de ligandos guiado por estructura es una estrategia poderosa, poco utilizada en biología vegetal, que nos ha permitido desarrollar potentes agonistas de los receptores de ABA. Estamos colaborando con el sector privado para mejorar aún más estos compuestos. En los próximos años, ampliaremos nuestra investigación hacia nuevas dianas con el fin de desarrollar sondas químicas innovadoras de interés biotecnológico.
