Discover today, the place where tomorrow's agriculture is being created.

About us

The Institute for Plant Molecular and Cellular Biology (IBMCP) is a research center funded by both the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) and the Spanish Research Council (CSIC).

Its main activity is cutting-edge scientific research aimed at generating knowledge about the key processes involved in the growth and development of plant organisms and their capacity to adapt to the environment. All of this is aimed at an ultimate goal: obtaining crops that are more productive and of higher quality.

IBMCP wants that the knowledge generated derives in technological transfer to develop and implement agronomic improvement strategies, increase the nutritional value of plants, as well as the production of products of pharmacological and industrial interest with high added value. And always under premises conducive to sustainable and high quality production.

We work every day to continue being a reference centre in Plant Biotechnology and to continue training people, promoting the excellence and talent of our researchers, and contributing to the integral development of society. Without science, there is no future.

Progress in biotechnology is only the beginning.

Vision

To be an international benchmark in three fundamental dimensions of science: science as a source of knowledge, as a generator of progress and as an instrument of improvement for the benefit of agriculture, the environment, health and the well-being of people, always through sustainable practices and the efficient use of resources.

Mission

The IBMCP faces the challenge of ensuring food security and the resources needed to meet the demands of an ever-growing population.

For this key social challenge, we decode the basic molecular and cellular mechanisms of plant growth and adaptation to the changing environment, and translate this knowledge into crop improvement while ensuring the sustainability of processes and crop productivity.

Values

For this key social challenge, we decode the basic molecular and cellular mechanisms of plant growth and adaptation to the changing environment, and translate this knowledge into crop improvement while ensuring the sustainability of processes and crop productivity.

Leadership

The IBMCP, throughout its almost 30 years of existence, has led the revolution in Plant Biology, known as the ‘genomic era’, which has allowed outstanding scientific advances, enabling the development of more productive and resilient plants, using fewer resources and achieving more nutritious, safer and higher quality crops.

Excellence

We are an international centre of excellence in plant biotechnology and molecular biology, plant genetics and crop breeding.

Our Institute fosters continuous improvement, with a creative approach, driven by the curiosity to discover and understand the fundamental mechanisms of plant biology. In order to achieve the highest standards of quality, productivity and sustainability of our crops.

Innovation

Since its inception, the IBMCP has demonstrated a high level of innovation and dynamism, promoting training and scientific excellence in a multidisciplinary environment.

To this end, we provide institutions and companies with the latest scientific technologies and a wide range of top-level infrastructures and resources. This is our way of making a significant contribution to developing a new, stronger, more profitable, healthier and more sustainable agriculture.

Sustainability

At IBMCP, we support the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, to improve the lives of all, leaving no one behind, contributing with our knowledge and research to the achievement of the SDGs.

To this end, we develop and implement strategies for agronomic or nutritional improvement of plants that lead to the sustainable production of healthy, quality food with high added value, and which, at the same time, are compatible with environmental care.

Objectives.

  • To generate valuable knowledge on Plant Biotechnology through innovative research.
  • To apply our knowledge and experience for the benefit of agriculture, the environment, health and human welfare.
  • To attract and educate scientists to lead the future of a more productive, healthy and sustainable agriculture.
  • To approach positions and sensitivities between research and the academic and business spheres in order to join forces, resources and talent to achieve together a healthier and more sustainable future.
  • Promote the outreach and the approach of society to scientific knowledge in order to raise awareness of the decisive role of science in its welfare and development.
  • Promote collaborations and share resources as an efficient way to maximise synergies and generate significant advances in favour of greater productivity, quality and food safety.
  • To collaborate with Public Administration and Institutions to promote legislation and policies that contribute to develop a more efficient, productive, prosperous, safe and sustainable agri-food sector.
